On October 3, 1789, George Washington issued a proclamation designating Thursday, November 26, of that year as a national day of thanks. During Thanksgiving Weekend, the Museum of the American Revolution will offer special talks, guided tours, and family-friendly activities from Friday, Nov. 24 – Sunday, Nov. 26 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. (6 p.m. on Friday).

This Mother’s Day, the Museum of the American Revolution will celebrate Revolutionary women with a Mother’s Day Tea on Sunday, May 13, 2018, featuring special guest Martha Washington, portrayed by a costumed historical interpreter. When George Washington first took command of the Continental Army in 1775, there was no standard uniform or insignia for officers, much less for the Commander-in-Chief. He needed something to distinguish himself from other officers. But what? The item he chose, a blue silk sash, or ribbon, worn across his chest, is currently on display at the Museum of the American Revolution until Oct. 9.

A sword that belonged to General Hugh Mercer, a fallen hero of the American Revolution and a close friend of George Washington, was presented to the Museum of the American Revolution by the St. Andrew’s Society of Philadelphia at a ceremony today, Jan. 12, the 240th anniversary of Mercer’s death. The sword will be on display at the new Museum when it opens to the public on April 19, 2017.

Author and historian Colin G. Calloway will discuss his new book The Indian World of George Washington: The First President, the First Americans, and the Birth of the Nation (2018), which was recently announced as a finalist for the 2018 National Book Awards, at the Museum of the American Revolution on Thursday, November 29, 2018, at 6 p.m. The event is part of the Museum’s popular Read the Revolution Speaker Series.

On the heels of the successful campaign to retire the former name and mascot of the NFL’s Washington Football Team, Ray Halbritter joined the Museum of the American Revolution for a virtual conversation about his role in leading the “Change the Mascot” movement. The conversation also explored the history of the Oneida Indian Nation, the difference between celebration and commemoration, and the importance of a diverse, nuanced telling of our nation’s history.

The Museum of the American Revolution today announced the naming of the Alan B. Miller Theater in honor of an $8 million gift from Museum Board Member Alan B. Miller, Chairman and CEO of Universal Health Services, Inc., and his wife Jill Miller. The Theater houses one of the most iconic surviving artifacts from the Revolutionary War, General George Washington’s War Tent.
