Newly Discovered Panoramic Watercolor Painting Reveals Only Known Wartime Depiction of Washington’s War Tent

The recent discovery of a 235-year-old, seven-foot panoramic painting offers an invaluable glimpse into the Revolutionary War. The sweeping watercolor painting of the fall 1782 Continental Army encampment at Verplanck’s Point, New York, contains the only known wartime depiction of General Washington’s headquarters tent, his command center throughout the war.

Upcoming Special Exhibition "Witness to Revolution: The Unlikely Travels of Washington’s Tent" Opens at the Museum of the American Revolution on Presidents Day Weekend, Feb. 2024

General George Washington’s headquarters tent from the Revolutionary War is the centerpiece of the Museum of the American Revolution, where more than a million visitors have experienced the tent’s power in an immersive theater experience. In the Museum's upcoming special exhibition, "Witness to Revolution: The Unlikely Travels of Washington’s Tent," more than 100 artifacts from across the country will be brought together to expand the story told in the Museum’s award-winning Washington’s War Tent theater presentation and explore the tent’s inspiring journey from the Revolutionary War to today. Opening during Presidents Day Weekend, Witness to Revolution will be on view exclusively at the Museum from Feb. 17, 2024, through Jan. 5, 2025, and will be included with regular Museum admission.

Museum’s Living History Youth Summer Institute Returns in July and August

This summer marks the return of the Museum of the American Revolution’s Living History Youth Summer Institute, a six-week intensive course for young adults interested in interpreting the lives of people of African ancestry in the Revolutionary era. This year’s program, which runs from July 5, 2023 – August 11, 2023, introduces eight participants to the museum field and the world of costumed historical interpretation, with a focus on enslaved and free people of African descent.
