A Museum display case featuring a portrait of a man wearing a military uniform

Born in Windham, Connecticut, Nathan Whiting led a military life. After graduating from Yale in 1743, he joined a colonial regiment that helped to capture the French fortress at Louisburg in Canada two years later. During the French and Indian War (1754-1763), Whiting again fought for the British cause, commanding Connecticut military forces and eventually rising to the rank of colonel. Whiting's portrait celebrated his military achievements in defending and expanding Britain's American empire.

A portrait of Whiting circa 1768 is now on view in the gallery Rule Britannia! 1760-1765.
