Commemorate Women’s Equality Day and the centennial of the 19th Amendment with the latest episode of AmRev360, hosted by Museum President & CEO Dr. R. Scott Stephenson, featuring George Mason University history professor Dr. Rosemarie Zagarri and Museum curatorial fellow Dr. Marcela Micucci. Learn the surprising story of the nation’s first women voters in the early decades of American Independence and get a sneak peek at the Museum’s 2020-21 special exhibition, When Women Lost the Vote: A Revolutionary Story, 1776-1807, that featured groundbreaking discoveries and challenged everything you know about the history of voting rights and voter suppression in America.

Learn more about the Mapping Early American Elections project, on which Zagarri is the lead historian, that is generously funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and developed by the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at George Mason University.

Read an excerpt of Zagarri's 2007 book, Revolutionary Backlash: Women and Politics in the Early American Republic, which offers the foundation for understanding women’s political activism and American “female politicians” in the 1790s, when the right to vote was considered a privilege of property rather than a natural right. We cite this book as a foundation for interpreting this surprising story in When Women Lost the Vote: A Revolutionary Story, 1776-1807.

AmRev360, hosted by Museum President & CEO Dr. R. Scott Stephenson, features lively conversations on the American Revolution from all angles. Previous episodes include "Mascots, Monuments, and Memory" with Ray Halbritter, "History Has Its Eyes on Us" with Dr. Joanne B. Freeman and Paul Oakley Stovall, "The Boston Massacre 250th and Digital History" with Dr. Serena Zabin, and "Conservation and Symbols of Revolutionary Flags" with textile conservator Virginia Whelan.

Zagarri is University Professor and Professor of History at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. She is the author of The Politics of Size: Representation in the United States, 1776-1850 (1987), Revolutionary Backlash: Women and Politics in the Early American Republic (2007), and A Woman's Dilemma: Mercy Otis Warren and the American Revolution (first edition, 1995; second edition, 2014). She is also editor of David Humphreys's "Life of General Washington" with George Washington's "Remarks" (1991).

Micucci is the Curatorial Fellow in Women's History at the Museum of the American Revolution.
