Interactive, Multimedia Timeline is Free and Accessible for Virtual Visitors Worldwide

The Museum of the American Revolution announced today that its digital Timeline of the American Revolution tool has won both a gold-level 2024 Anthem Award in the Digital & Innovative Experiences: Education, Art, and Culture category and a gold-level 2024 w3 Award in the Websites: Education category.

Launched in April 2023, the Timeline of the American Revolution uses nearly 100 historical objects, works of art, textiles, and documents from the Museum’s collection to bring the American Revolution to life through a visually rich and user-friendly experience. It features high-quality, zoomable images and descriptions of each object, as well as links to related material, to position the objects in their historical context and facilitate exploration of America’s founding. It also offers short videos with Museum experts to highlight key features and stories about selected items for users to dive even deeper into the history of the American Revolution.

The Timeline is free and accessible to students, educators, and digital explorers worldwide, and has generated 398,776 pageviews and has reached 34,352 users to date. It works on modern browsers on mobile, tablet, and desktop devices and offers a downloadable version for offline users. As part of the Museum’s commitment to accessibility, the Timeline is Section 508 Compliant to ensure that information is easily accessible to individuals with disabilities.

“The best way to help people feel connected to the American Revolution is to allow them to explore the objects that tell the stories of the diverse people and the complex events that were a part of it,” says Adrienne Whaley, Director of Education and Community Engagement at the Museum. “We are incredibly grateful to both the Anthem Awards and w3 Awards for recognizing the Timeline of the American Revolution, a tool that allows virtual visitors worldwide to access these objects anywhere, anytime.”

The Anthem Awards initiative was launched by The Webby Awards in 2021 in response to the prevalence that social good has taken within the national conversation and cultural zeitgeist in recent years. By amplifying the voices that spark global change, the Anthem Awards is defining a new benchmark for impactful work that inspires others to take action in their communities.

2024 marks the first gold-level Anthem Award win for the Museum. The Museum also won a silver-level Anthem Award for its “Finding Freedom” online interactive in 2021, a silver-level Anthem Award for its African American Interpretive Program in 2022, and a bronze-level Anthem Award for its Citizenship Initiative in 2023. This year’s Anthem Awards season was the most competitive yet, with more than 2,300 entries submitted from 34 countries worldwide.

“The Anthem Awards were born out of the desire to amplify and celebrate the voices that are creating sustainable change and to inspire others to take action,” said Patricia McLoughlin, Anthem Awards General Manager. “In a year where so much is at stake, it is incredibly important to recognize impact work and celebrate the progress happening globally. Congratulations to all of this year’s Winners.”

The w3 Awards aims to identify and honor the world’s best digital content creators across the industry. Now in its 19th year, it receives thousands of entries annually and recognizes outstanding social media marketing and content, websites, online marketing and advertising, mobile sites and apps, online video, podcasts, and emerging tech.
