The Museum Marks Hispanic Heritage Month 2024
September 15 - October 15, 2024
Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, the Museum will explore the contributions that Hispanic Americans made during the American Revolution with daily programs, talks, and online resources from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
Now on Display: Portrait of Stephen "Don Esteban" Minor

At the same time Spain openly joined the American war in 1779, Pennsylvania-born Stephen Minor, along with a handful of other Americans, joined the Spanish Army in Louisiana. Minor fought with the Spanish, under the command of Bernardo de Gálvez, Colonel and Governor of Louisiana, to retake Florida from the English. For his service during the Siege of Pensacola in the spring of 1781, he was made a captain in the Spanish forces. After the war he settled in Mississippi, becoming a wealthy landholder, a Spanish commissioner, bank president, and the last Spanish governor of Natchez before it was ceded to the United States in 1798. The portrait, attributed to William Edward West circa 1809, is a gift to the Museum from Iberdrola and is now part of the Museum's collection.

Join a Museum educator on our recreated privateer sloop in the core galleries to take the Spanish flag out of the sea chest to learn more about Spain's role at sea during the Revolutionary War, the large flags flown by privateer and naval ships at sea, and the Museum's project to recreate a "suit of colours," or set of flags, carried by ships during the Revolutionary War.
Spanish-Translated Audio Tour

The Museum is proud to offer a Spanish-translated edition of our audio tour of the core galleries. The tour was translated in partnership with Al Día News. Audio tours cost an additional $5 for general admission, $4 for groups, and $3 for Museum Members.
Revolution Around the World: Spain and the American Revolution

As part of our Revolution Around the World series, take a closer look as we examine Spain's role in the American Revolution, including a look at Captain Yelverton Peyton's powder horn commemorating the British departure from Havana, Cuba, in July 1763 as well as The Sortie Made by the Garrison of Gibraltar painted by John Trumbull in 1789, both of which are featured in our galleries.

Historian Dr. Gonzalo M. Quinetero Saravia is the author of the award-winning biography, Bernardo de Gálvez: Spanish Hero of the American Revolution, which traces the life of Gálvez, who led the Spanish forces in North America as supreme commander, and later served as viceroy of New Spain, providing a reinterpretation of the international factors involved in the Revolutionary War. Collection Highlight: Spanish Musket

Before Spain allied with France against the British in 1779, they secretly sent equipment, including muskets like this one, to America. The first shipment of muskets was purchased by Jeremiah Lee and Elbridge Gerry in February 1775. This example in the Museum's collection was the standard issue longarm for Spanish forces fighting for King Carlos III alongside their new American allies.
