School Field Trip FAQs

How do I book a field trip?

How much do field trips cost?

A tour of the core galleries through the Through Their Eyes program or of The Declaration's Journey special exhibition costs $12 per student, with one free chaperone for every 10 students. Additional adult chaperones are $18 per person.

When are field trips available?

Museum field trips are available daily.

When should I reserve a field trip?

Reservations must be made in advance. Late April, May, and early June are the most popular time for school bookings. We recommend making your reservation for these months as far in advance as possible.

Can I change my reservation?

Final headcount is due 14 days prior to your scheduled group visit. Any reservation changes must be made by the group leader who booked the field trip.

How many chaperones do I need?

The Museum requires one adult chaperone for every 10 students.

When is payment due?

Final balance payment is due 14 days before your scheduled group visit. Purchase orders are an acceptable form of payment.

What options are available for my field trip?

Schools can choose to tour the core galleries with the Through Their Eyes program or the special exhibition, The Declaration’s Journey (available through Dec. 23, 2026). Schools may experience a modified version of the Through Their Eyes program during our highest volume days in April, May, and June.

Can I add any programming on to the tour?

Yes! Add a themed activity to your visit, through March 31, 2027. Programs include Thinking Like a Historian (for grades 4-12), Inside Washington's Army (for grades 4-12), or Whose Liberty?: African Americans in the Revolution (for grades 9-12). Themed programming is $3 per person, with one free chaperone for every 10 students.

Is there space to eat lunch onsite at the Museum?

Lunch space is available on a first-come, first-served basis and must be reserved in advance. We charge a $20 non-refundable fee to reserve the space.
