Teen-Focused Workshop and Author Talk with L.M. Elliott, Author of “Hamilton and Peggy! A Revolutionary Friendship”
February 6, 2019Part of Museum’s New “Write the Revolution” Series for Young Readers
New York Times best-selling author L.M. Elliott will join the Museum of the American Revolution on Sunday, March 3, 2019 from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. for a special workshop and lively afternoon discussion on her 2018 book Hamilton and Peggy! A Revolutionary Friendship. It marks the second event in the Museum’s new Write the Revolution series for young readers.
In Hamilton and Peggy!, Elliott weaves a richly detailed tale about the extraordinary Peggy Schuyler and her revolutionary friendship with Alexander Hamilton. It is geared toward ages 13 and up.
“Elliott combines a flair for fiction with masterly research to create a dense yet eminently readable story about Peggy Schuyler, third daughter of Gen. Philip Schuyler, one of George Washington’s right-hand men… Elliott does a remarkable job of humanizing important historical figures.”– Publishers Weekly
From 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., Elliott will lead a workshop geared towards young authors ages 11 – 15. In this hour-long workshop, Elliott will share how she used historical documents such as letters, journals, and memoirs to discover and create a dramatic, fact-based story. Using prompts, attendees will learn how to construct a story and will begin writing their own. Tickets are $15 for the workshop and $25 for the workshop and a copy of the book (both include Museum admission). They are available for purchase here.
From 2 – 3:30 p.m. in the Museum’s Liberty Hall, Elliott will present a talk, book signing and trivia about the Schuyler sisters, who Alexander Hamilton first met during the army’s 1780 winter encampment in Morristown. Although Margaret “Peggy” Schuyler’s character only had 36 solo words in Hamilton: An American Musical, Elliott will discuss how Peggy witnessed some of the Revolution’s most momentous events. This special author talk is specifically designed for teens but is open to all ages. It is free with regular museum admission.
