PHILADELPHIA – March 5, 2014 –General George Washington, booming cannons, and more than 15 Revolutionary War re-enactors from across the region offered the opening salvo for the Museum of the American Revolution. A robust crowd of supporters attended the public ceremony celebrating the beginning of site preparation for the Museum of the American Revolution (MoAR) to be built at 3rd and Chestnut Streets in the heart of Philadelphia’s historic district.

At the event, Museum President and CEO Michael Quinn announced the selection of Philadelphia-based INTECH Construction as the general contractor to build the 118,000 square foot museum designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects. Mr. Quinn also announced the benefit to the local and regional economy that will be generated by the construction of the museum (building and exhibitry): $135.9 million in direct and indirect spending, and $22.8 million in employee compensation which is the equivalent of 599 full-time employees.

Quinn recognized Governor Corbett for his generous support through a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program. He also thanked MoAR Chairman H.F. (Gerry) Lenfest, and board member and former Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell for their dedication to the project. “Without their support,” said Quinn, “we would not be here today.”

General Washington invited Quinn, Rendell and Lenfest to fire the opening salvo. Cannon, musket fire and resounding “huzzahs” from the assembled crowd signaled the beginning of site preparation and demolition for the project. “This project will be great for our city and our nation,” said Rendell. “Visiting the Museum of the American Revolution will provide heritage tourists with an overview of the entire Revolutionary era—why the war started, what happened during the war, and the incredible, world-changing legacy of that astounding period.”

About The Museum of the American Revolution:

The Museum of the American Revolution will tell the complete story of the American Revolution using its distinguished collection of objects, artifacts, artwork, and manuscripts. Permanent and special exhibition galleries, theaters, and large-scale tableaux will bring to life the original “greatest generation,” and engage people in the history and continuing relevance of the American Revolution. Construction is now underway for the new Museum that is being built steps away from Independence Hall, Carpenter’s Hall, Franklin Court, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the Revolution. It will serve as a portal to the nation’s many Revolutionary sites, sparking interest, providing context and encouraging explorations that begin at the Museum’s doorstep. The Museum is a private, non-profit organization. For more information, visit www.AmRevMuseum.org or call toll free, 877-740-1776.
