Prescheduled Offerings Highlight Existing Initiatives, Increase Accessibility of Museum Gallery Experience for Visitors Beginning Nov. 14

The Museum of the American Revolution today announces the offering of quarterly American Sign Language (ASL) and Touch and Descriptive highlights tours for visitors beginning Saturday, Nov. 14, 2026. The goal of these prescheduled tours is to provide additional access to existing resources and more deeply engage with the blind and low-vision and Deaf communities by expanding the Museum’s offerings.

Both tours will be offered quarterly on Saturdays in 2027 on Feb. 13, May 8, and Aug. 14. The Touch and Descriptive tours will run from 9:30–11 a.m. ASL tours will run from 1–2:30 p.m. ASL tours will be led by a Museum educator and two sign language interpreters through the Museum’s core galleries followed by an ASL interpreted showing of Washington’s War Tent. For the Touch and Descriptive tours, a Museum educator will lead a tactile tour of the core galleries featuring sensory experiences and touchable replica objects, including a Liberty Tree, 3D portrait of King George III, and tea chest, to bring the gallery experience to life. The Touch Tour will also conclude with a prerecorded audio description of Washington’s War Tent film.

“The Museum’s commitment to telling a more inclusive story of the American Revolution also means doing our best to provide accessible and inclusive experiences for all visitors,” said Meg Bowersox, Manager of Gallery Interpretation “By implementing routine ASL and Touch and Descriptive tours, we hope to grow and strengthen our engagement with people who are blind or have low vision, or deaf and hard of hearing and better serve their communities.

Additional accessibility offerings at the Museum include a free Audio Descriptive Tour of its core galleries, released in April 2025, which provides evocative descriptions of objects and environments along with navigational guidance to help guests who are blind or have low vision move throughout the galleries. The tour is accompanied by a Tactile Map, created in collaboration with Philly Touch Tours and Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, featuring braille and raised touchable guides of the Museum’s public spaces that guests can check out from our front desk.

The Museum also provides closed captioning of our gallery films, transcripts of our core galleries and special exhibition audio tours, and an ASL family scavenger hunt, completed in partnership with the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf.

Museum staff receive accessibility training from local organizations like Art-Reach and Philly Touch Tours to better engage with the disability community using replica objects, touchable graphics, and more daily as part of tours and informal engagement in our galleries.

Tickets are included with Museum admission thanks to support from The Gordon and Llura Gund 1993 Foundation. For Access and SNAP cardholders, reserve tickets by contacting [email protected]. For a list of all the Museum’s accessibility offerings, visit our website.
