Exhibition Follows Washington’s Story as a Leader, General in Continental Army, and Citizen-Soldier Through the Lens of His War Tent

Among His Troops Now on Display Through Jan. 2, 2027, in Kenosha Wisconsin

The Museum of the American Revolution has developed a traveling exhibition, Among His Troops: George Washington and the Citizen-Soldier, now on display at the Pritzker Military Museum & Library in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The exhibition opened on Friday, June 12, 2026, and is on view until Jan. 2, 2027.

Among His Troops follows the story of George Washington as a natural leader, general in the Continental Army, and as a citizen-soldier following his service through the lens of his war tent, which is on display at the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. At the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783, George Washington handed his military power back to the American people. Washington had demonstrated his commitment to the cause of the United States for his fellow officers and soldiers throughout the war. With independence won, Washington led by example and used his power to be a good citizen, leaving the leadership of the new nation to the elected Congress.

“The tradition of the citizen-soldier is something that is enshrined in American military ethos dating back to the American Revolution – the idea of a person who is called up in the time of their country’s need and then returns home to their everyday life, letting go of the power entrusted to them,” said James Taub, Associate Curator for the Museum and Lead Curator for Among His Troops. “Highlighting Washington’s story and displaying objects associated with his tent and army allows the opportunity to show how the American Revolution has had a lasting impact on our military and nation through a name all Americans will recognize. We are very excited to unveil this exhibition for the first time at the Pritzker Military Museum & Library.

The Pritzker Military Museum & Library shares and preserves the lived experiences and stories of citizen-soldiers, so future generations understand the people behind the service and the citizenship that continues after returning to everyday life.

“From the first shots of the Revolution to the generations that followed, the idea remains the same: free people must defend the republic and return home committed to making it stronger,” said Pritzker Military Museum & Library President and CEO Scott English. “Washington embodied that responsibility, and so did the ordinary Americans who stood with him. Their legacy is not locked in 1776. It lives wherever citizens understand that liberty must be carried forward.”

The Museum has displayed tent-related exhibitions previously, including one with the same name that focused on Witness to Revolution: The Unlikely Travels of Washington’s Tent, which was on display from Feb. 2024 through Jan. 2025.
