Remembering Gordon Wood
June 9, 2026
The Museum of the American Revolution is deeply saddened by Professor Gordon Wood’s tragic passing on Sunday, June 7. As a preeminent scholar of the American Revolution and a founding member of the Museum of the American Revolution's scholarly advisory board more than 20 years ago, Professor Wood made a profound impact on the development and interpretive vision of our institution. We were blessed by his service as a Board Member from 2012 to 2018 and, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions, he was elected Director Emeritus in December 2018.
Professor Wood remained an inspiration, an advisor, a generous supporter, and a treasured friend over the decade since our public opening in April 2017. We snapped this photo of him when he visited the Museum with his wife Louise earlier this spring. He is pictured in front of a portrait of the Museum’s founding Chairman, the late H. F. “Gerry” Lenfest. We express our heartfelt condolences to the Wood family, and his many friends and admirers.
