Presidents Day Weekend
Commemorate George Washington's 288th birthday at the Museum this Presidents Day, which was first celebrated in 1879. Throughout the weekend, see Washington’s War Tent, a dramatic theater presentation of the field tent that served as Washington’s wartime headquarters. At interactive discovery carts, handle replica components of Washington’s War Tent and learn the story of Harry Washington, who escaped from Mount Vernon and fought on the other side of the Revolutionary War. In the rotunda, make your own inaugural button to take home, inspired by Washington’s inaugural buttons that are on display in the Museum. At a talk-back wall, guests can declare what they would do as president.
In the Museum’s family-friendly discovery center, Revolution Place, visitors of all ages can listen to a reading of Grace for President by Kelly DiPuccio, make a whirligig, participate in a print shop activity, or see a first-person theatrical performance based on the life of Continental soldier Joseph Plumb Martin. Revolution Place will be open from 12-4:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and 12-4 p.m. on Monday.
Saturday, Feb. 15 at 10 a.m.
The Museum will give away 288 donuts from Federal Donuts in honor of Washington’s 288th birthday (first come, first served; while supplies last). The 1776-themed donuts feature a milk-glaze and patriotic sanding sugar in red, white, and blue.
Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m.
Matthew Costello, author of The Property of the Nation: George Washington’s Tomb, Mount Vernon, and the Memory of the First President, will discuss the homes of George Washington and his continuing legacy. The talk is included with regular Museum admission and will be followed by a book signing with Costello.
Monday, Feb. 17 at 11:30 a.m. & 1:30 p.m.
George Washington really slept here! Visitors can watch—and join in! —a demonstration of how to assemble a life-size replica of Washington's bed.
The Museum will be open for extended hours on Saturday, Feb. 15 and Sunday, Feb. 16 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
