Philadelphia Flag Maker Advertisement

Rebecca Flower Young, a Philadelphian flag maker, placed this advertisement for the sale of "colours," or flags for the Continental Army and Continental Navy in the Pennsylvania Packet on June 26, 1781. Working about a block away from where the Museum of the American Revolution is today, Young created flags, drum cases, and blankets for the Revolutionary cause. Her daughter Mary, born in 1776, likely learned the art of flag-making from her mother at a young age. Known later as Mary Young Pickersgill, she made the flag that flew over Fort McHenry in Baltimore in 1814, a flag known today as the "Star-Spangled Banner."
