Letter Written by Captain Jabez Lane

On March 30, 1779, Captain Jabez Lane of the 6th Massachusetts Regiment petitioned Major General Alexander McDougall for an honorable discharge from the Continental Army. When Lane enlisted in 1775, he left his wife and children at home (in what is modern-day Maine) with the intention of sending them his army pay. However, lack of pay and inflation made it difficult for Lane to provide for his family. Lane returned home in 1780 after five years of service and lived with his family until his death in 1830.
