Rhode Island Regiment

Jean-Baptiste-Antoine de Verger, a lieutenant in the French Army, painted this portrait of a soldier of African descent from the Rhode Island Regiment following the Siege of Yorktown. The Rhode Islanders probably wore the same anchor-decorated caps at the Verplanckā€™s Point encampment. Rhode Island continues to use the anchor as its state symbol.
