Philip Van Cortlandt

Colonel Philip Van Cortlandt, shown in this miniature portrait, commanded the 2nd New York Regiment. At Verplanck’s Point, he and other officers took turns serving as “officers of the day” in charge of posting guards and maintaining order in camp. Colonel Van Cortlandt also presided over the Continental Army’s court martial hearings.
