St. George’s “Dreadful” Letter

The night after he survived the Battle of Brandywine, Richard Mansergh St. George wrote this letter. He added to it following the Battle of Paoli. The letter conveys how the harrowing experience of combat shook his confidence. A slight wound in the heel at Brandywine and the “dreadful scene of Havock” at Paoli caused him to have sleepless nights in camp. Seemingly addressed to a woman back home in Ireland, the letter was never sent. Brigadier General Anthony’s Wayne’s troops captured it when they overran the British camp at the Battle of Germantown.
