“Murdered by the Rebels”
Portrait of St. George
Richard Mansergh St. George’s family members added the inscription “murdered in his House by the Rebels in 1798” on the back of this portrait by Hugh Douglas Hamilton. The inscription conveys their belief that St. George died in a cruel way and paid for his loyalty to the King with his life. This painting may be a study for the more refined portrait of St. George in his silk cap by Hugh Douglas Hamilton displayed in part 3 of this online exhibit.
