William Falconer’s Sword

At the age of 19, Lieutenant William Falconer of the 15th Regiment’s grenadier company carried this cuttoe (a lightweight sword) at the Battle of Brandywine. He died that day amidst the British grenadiers’ furious bayonet charge against Washington’s troops. Falconer’s cuttoe and belongings were sent home to his family in England. They became mementos of Falconer’s sacrifice for the British Crown.
