L’Enfant’s “K”

This detail is from a letter that Pierre Charles L’Enfant wrote on December 7, 1800. Note the unusual way that L’Enfant writes the letter “K” in the word “likewise.” L’Enfant capitalizes the letter and includes a distinctive curve at the top. This technique matches the way L’Enfant wrote the “K” as part of the word “verplanck” on the back of the Verplanck’s Point watercolor.
