L’Enfant’s Engravings for Steuben’s Manual

Pierre Charles L’Enfant contributed eight sketches for Inspector General Baron von Steuben’s new manual, Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States. Although spare in artistic flair, they helped explain the new methods of military maneuvering and organization. This plate shows how to lay out a regimental camp. At Verplanck’s Point, the Continental Army camped according to Steuben’s plan and impressed the French with their mastery of his drill.
