Author Talk with Matthew R. Costello
To commemorate Presidents Day Weekend, Matthew Costello, author of “The Property of the Nation”: George Washington’s Tomb, Mount Vernon, and the Memory of the First President, will discuss the homes of George Washington, where Washington’s legacy was defined in war and elevated in retirement. Mark A. Turdo, Curator of Collections & Special Projects, will introduce this talk, included with admission and followed by a book signing with Costello.
Dr. Matthew R. Costello is the Acting Director of The David M. Rubenstein National Center for White House History at the White House Historical Association. He joined the Association as its Senior Historian in November 2016. He earned his Ph.D. and M.A. in American history from Marquette University, and his B.A. in history and political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His first book, “The Property of the Nation”: George Washington’s Tomb, Mount Vernon, and the Memory of the First President, was published in October 2019 by University Press of Kansas. He also teaches a course on White House history at American University in Washington, D.C.
